Programme

Carel Kraayenhof and Matangi Quartet bring the music of Ennio Morricone to Festival Classique. With the beach and the setting sun as décor, Maestro Morricone takes you to a world of iconic film scenes.

Carel and Morricone were musical friends who made music together. Matangi and Carel delved into his music archive and arranged a number of gems from Morricone’s oeuvre for bandoneon and string quartet. In a magical concert, the Matangis and Carel express the world of Morricone and his sources of inspiration, but also the musical legacy he left behind with composers such as Max Richter, Osvaldo Golijov and Rogier van Otterloo.

Carel Kraayenhof, fascinated by music at a young age, became a virtuoso bandoneonist. After being introduced to the instrument in the 1980s, he quickly became a prominent figure in the world of tango. His talent led to collaborations with big names such as Astor Piazzolla in New York and an invitation from Osvaldo Pugliese in Argentina. The highlight of his career came in 2002 when he played Piazzolla’s Adiós Nonino at the royal wedding of Prince Willem-Alexander and Máxima Zorreguieta, to a global audience of more than 55 million people. The wedding ‘soundtrack’ went triple platinum, cementing Kraayenhof’s status as an ambassador of tango music. In 2018, he received the Edison Oeuvre Award in recognition of his dedication and versatility.

Matangi, founded in The Hague in 1999, will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2024 as one of the most versatile string quartets in the world. The name, taken from the Indian goddess of music and knowledge, reflects their devotion to both tradition and innovation. Under the guidance of experienced mentors such as Stefan Metz (Orlando Quartet) and Henk Guitart (Schönberg Quartet), the members have developed into independent and idiosyncratic musicians. Matangi combines a love for string quartet history with a curiosity for new music and collaborations, both in traditional concert halls and innovative venues. With concert tours all over the world, successful CDs and the annual (Un)heard Music Festival in The Hague, Matangi has built an impressive reputation.
